Skye Wheatley Opens Up About Viral Backlash and Its Impact

Skye Wheatley, the Australian influencer and former Big Brother contestant, has recently opened up about the significant impact a viral backlash had on her life and career. The controversy stemmed from an ‘insensitive’ joke she posted on Instagram about her sex life with her boyfriend, Lachlan Waugh. In a candid revelation, Skye shared how the incident led to her being axed from Channel Seven’s reboot of Big Brother and the subsequent toll it took on her mental health and professional relationships.

Background Information

Skye Wheatley first gained public attention in 2014 when she appeared on the Australian version of Big Brother. Known for her bubbly personality and candid nature, she quickly became a fan favorite. Over the years, Skye transitioned into a successful social media influencer, amassing a large following on platforms like Instagram and YouTube. Her content often includes lifestyle tips, beauty advice, and glimpses into her personal life with her boyfriend, Lachlan Waugh, and their children.

Main Event or Topic

The controversy began when Skye posted a joke on Instagram about her sex life with Lachlan. In response to a follower’s question about who is more dominant in the bedroom, Skye replied, “Oh, it depends … If I’m in the mood, I’m not going to take no for an answer. But he likes that. He likes when I’m like, ‘Babe, let’s have sex.'” This comment quickly went viral, with many interpreting it as a reference to non-consensual sex.

During a recent episode of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! Australia, Skye addressed the backlash, stating, “It started blowing up, getting posted to other pages. People were saying, ‘She’s making her partner have unconsensual sex.’ I had to post an apology explaining myself. It’s the perfect example of how things get twisted.”

Skye revealed that the backlash had severe consequences for her career. She claimed that she was set to star in the 2022 reboot of Big Brother but was axed from the show just weeks before filming. “I was supposed to go on for that, but a couple of weeks before flying to Sydney to do it, I received an email from producers telling me I’d been axed. They wouldn’t tell me the reason, but it had to be because of the joke,” she said.

Reactions and Impact

The backlash had a profound impact on Skye’s career and mental health. She explained that brands that had previously sponsored her no longer wanted to be associated with her due to the negative attention. “Brands didn’t want to be associated with me because of the hate surrounding my name,” she said. “Now I’m constantly paranoid about what I’m saying. I’m always worrying I’m offending someone or have said something rude.”

Skye also shared how the incident affected her mental health, making her more cautious about her public statements. “I know things can be taken so far out of context that it’s scary, so I have had to restrict myself a lot in what I say,” she added.

Expert Opinions

Industry experts and social media analysts have weighed in on the incident, highlighting the challenges influencers face in the digital age. One expert noted, “In today’s social media landscape, influencers are under constant scrutiny. A single misstep can lead to a viral backlash that can have lasting repercussions on their careers and mental health.”

Another expert emphasized the importance of context and intent in online communications. “It’s crucial to consider the context and intent behind a statement before jumping to conclusions. In Skye’s case, her comment was meant to be a light-hearted joke, but it was interpreted in a way that caused significant harm.”

Summary and Future Implications

Skye Wheatley’s experience serves as a cautionary tale for influencers and public figures about the potential pitfalls of social media. The incident underscores the importance of being mindful of one’s words and the potential for misinterpretation. As Skye continues to navigate the challenges of her career, she remains committed to being more cautious and thoughtful in her public statements.

Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see how Skye’s career evolves and whether she can rebuild her professional relationships and public image. Despite the setbacks, Skye remains a resilient figure, determined to learn from her experiences and move forward.

Skye Wheatley has revealed the impact viral backlash had on her after she posted an ‘insensitive’ joke on Instagram about her sex life with boyfriend Lachlan Waugh.

The influencer, 30, recently claimed she was axed from Channel Seven’s reboot of Big Brother back in 2022 after making the controversial sex confession.

During Thursday’s episode of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! Australia, Skye slammed social media trolls for ‘twisting’ her words.

‘It started blowing up, getting posted to other pages,’ she explained.

‘She’s making her partner have unconsensual sex [they would say]. I had to post an apology explaining myself. It’s the perfect example of how things get twisted.’

She explained brands that had sponsored her didn’t ‘want to be associated with me because of the hate surrounding my name’.

Skye continued: ‘Now I’m constantly paranoid about what I’m saying. I’m always worrying I’m offending someone or have said something rude.’

‘I know things can be taken so far out of context that it’s scary, so I have had to restrict myself a lot in what I say.’

Skye previously said she was set to star in Big Brother two years ago, alongside fan-favourites Reggie Bird, Tim Dormer, Tully Smyth and Layla Subritzky.

But she was booted from the season 14 show just weeks out from filming after posting an ‘insensitive’ joke on Instagram about her sex life with boyfriend Lachlan.

‘I was supposed to go on for that, but a couple of weeks before flying to Sydney to do it, I answered a question on my Instagram, ‘Who’s more dominant in the bedroom?’,’ she told news.com.au.

‘And I said, ‘Oh, it depends … If I’m in the mood, I’m not going to take no for an answer.’ But he likes that. He likes when I’m like, ‘Babe, let’s have sex.’

‘But everyone was like, “You make him have non-consensual sex”.’

Skye, who first shot to fame on Big Brother in 2014, later received an email from producers telling her she’d been axed from the show.

‘They said, ‘Hey, we’re not going to go ahead with putting you in.’ They wouldn’t tell me the reason, but, that had to be the reason,’ she added.

‘They didn’t want bad publicity or anything like that, which was really disappointing. It actually broke my heart.’
